So this was visible through the front window of a fancy fashion store in Rome last summer. Something like Prada, or Gucci, or the like. It’s a staircase, functional and used to reach the second floor, but the forward panel of each step was layered with a skinny, rectangular screen, so that when viewed from directly across it formed a composite flat surface. As Jim and his cousin wandered off down the empty street, heading in the general direction of home, I stood there and watched. It was beautiful, lighting up the pavement and darkness with its technicolored madness. Finally I scrambled out my camera, filmed it sideways for a beat, and then raced after them, tearing up the amber lit cobbled streets till I regained their side. I wish the video quality was better. I wish I had filmed more of it. But here it is–tilt your head to the side, watch, and you’ll see a bird’s eye view of a city, rising, rising, till it pans over mountains, and finally achieves the starry deeps of space…
